The dark theme of Google Photos unfolds without Android Q

[ad_1]

In the past few weeks, many proprietary apps have gone dark, including Google Calendar and Keep, last month. The latest is now Google Photos, users of Q devices other than Android having seen the particular theme darker.

Google Photos first received its dark theme with the Android Q feature at the system level. Several users of Samsung and OnePlus (via Reddit) on Android 9 Pie are already getting the new look.

Google seems to extend the dark mode beyond Q devices to all users. On Pie, many report that it respects the developer option in the settings, without switching to Photos to turn on / off manually. A similar situation applies to Google Drive where a dark theme is currently only available with Q.

Like other Google apps, this particular look adopts a dark gray background rather than opting for black. The search field (with the merged status bar) and the lower navigation are slightly brighter than the background of the main gallery.

Given the contrast, your photos tend to appear and stand out more when scrolling. Appearance is carefully applied in Google Photos, including the navigation drawer, settings, and share sheet. Google Lens seems to be the only major exception.

The dark theme of Google Photos is developing as a server-side update with the latest version of the application. Although several users have changed their look, it is not yet widely available at tonight's date.
