MOUNT HOLLY, NJ (AP) – A homeless man pleaded guilty to a charge as part of a GoFundMe scheme that, according to prosecutors, would have yielded $ 400,000 with a story invented according to which he would have helped a broken down driver.
Johnny Bobbitt, 36, of Philadelphia, pleaded guilty in New Jersey Superior Court Friday for conspiracy to commit theft by deception.
He faces five years of probation and was enrolled in the state drug court program.
On Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to a charge laid by the federal government for ten years.
Prosecutors claim that Bobbitt conspired with Katelyn McClure and her boyfriend of the time, Mark D 'Amico, to invent a story in 2017 about Bobbitt's allegedly giving McClure money while She was stuck along a highway in Philadelphia.
McClure pled guilty to a federal charge this week. She and D'Amico also face charges.
D'Amico denied having acted badly.
