As promised, Codemasters' F1 2019 will soon receive an update providing the full list of drivers and the 2019 Formula 2 event calendar. And that could not have happened at a worse time.
Indeed, Anthoine Hubert, driver of F2, was killed in competition at the Belgian Grand Prix on Saturday. Hubert, driving the BWT Arden team, hit the wall at the top of the formidable Eau Rouge-Raidillon complex and bounced on the path of Juan Manuel Correa, who hit Hubert at full speed.
Both pilots were taken to the Circuit Medical Center, where Hubert died as a result of his injuries.
The news has put a damper on today's Formula 1 race, won by Ferrari's Charles LeClerc, and dominates discussions in the F1 community. The F1 subreddit players have posted tribute screens of their rides in a BWT Arden F2 car in Monaco and at Castellet, where Hubert has won victories in his rookie season.
Others have suggested changing the colors of their multiplayer cars to match the pink Hubert livery with BWT Arden. With the multiplayer event this weekend at Spa-Francorchamps (which ends today), a field of pink cars would be a poignant tribute.
The FIA has canceled today's F2 sprint race (a second race in which the top eight are reversed on the starting grid) out of respect for Hubert and his family. A delicate question now arises for Codemasters, who probably modeled Hubert for his appearance in the game when the F2 update will be launched.
Would it be insensitive, or even feasible at this point, to replace him (and Arden has not yet named Hubert's replacement). Or would it be insensitive to leave him in homage, to participate in a video game after his death? If tribute is made, how would that be called?
I asked these questions in an email to a Codemasters representative, but given the Labor Day weekend, we may not have an answer.
Codemasters watched the update F2 2019 on Thursday but did not say when it would be added to the game. This is the first year that the Formula 2, the series just below F1, is in the video game, but so far, she uses 2018 teams, drivers and even tire mixes.
Three F2 drivers starting in 2018 will start in F1 this year: Landar Norris from McLaren; Alexander Albon, recently promoted Aston Martin Red Bull; and 2018 rider champion George Russell, for Williams. They appear in both sets of the game. Aditionally, F1 2019The career mode starts in F2, where the driver created by the player is joined by two fictitious rivals of the F2 category for the 2019 season of the best series.
F1 2019 launched June 28 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.
