BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) – Erie County Director Mark Poloncarz held an update on COVID-19 Thursday afternoon and said a decision on a red zone could be made by the Status next Wednesday, November 25.
Poloncarz said the county recorded a new high for new COVID cases on Wednesday with 651 and the positivity rate was 7.8%. The county executive also said there was an increase in hospitalizations over the past week with 84 patients in Erie County hospitals on November 10, compared to 179 patients in Erie County hospitals. November 17.
He went on to say he was afraid of what the next few weeks might bring.

In response to a question about when a decision could be made on a red zone, Poloncarz said:
“The state will analyze the data from Monday night and Tuesday and somehow make an announcement on Wednesday, as we saw last week.”
The county executive said it would not anticipate a decision until Wednesday because officials want to make sure they have enough data to analyze.
The restrictions for a red zone according to the governor’s office are:
- Places of worship operate at 25% of their capacity or 10 people maximum.
- Mass gatherings are prohibited.
- Only essential businesses can be opened.
- Restaurants can only offer take-out.
- Schools are closed and switch to distance learning.
