The depth of Tetris 99 mechanics makes it impossible, improves a perfect game



Where do we find it hard to drop the boys?

When Tetris 99 was announced last week at Nintendo Direct, it was the first time, I'm sure, no one, other than the developers and Nintendo, thought to associate the royal battle genre with what is arguably the most great game of all time. A few days later, I can not believe how well it works. I've long claimed that Tetris is one of the only perfect games on the market, because apart from the introduction of the catches, how has the basic formula changed in 35 years of life? This is the mark of something big.

I guess I should change my position by saying that only player Tetris was perfect because I see now that even the very good multiplayer mode of Tetris DS could be improved. With Tetris 99, I think we're dealing with the ultimate multiplayer format for the game.

The game having not been started with a manual, the mechanics outside the usual controls were left to the community as a whole. Soon after the launch, a thread on Reddit started breaking these mechanisms and from there, some strategies began to form.

Let's start with the basics. It's still Tetris you must erase the lines. But as it is a multiplayer mode, you want to harm your opponents by sending tetromino memory lines on their board. Erasing a line will not do much else than erasing them from your chart. To send rubbish lines to your opponents, you must erase two or more lines at a time. For a double and triple line break, you send one and two lines of memory respectively to your target. For a Tetris (four-line erase), you send four lines. These can be supplemented by combos or a special placement called T-Spin.

Since you can send waste lines to your target, it's only fair that people can target you and also fill your chart. The lines you have sent will appear on the left side of your screen and, over time, they will be added to your table. As long as you have parasitic lines in your queue, you can only interrupt them with multiple line reminders. Once you have cleared your queue, you can restart your attacks. The time in which your queue is put on your board decreases as more players are eliminated from the game. It starts about four seconds and is reduced to one minute.

As is the case with any other royal battle title, you are awarded victories in Tetris 99. For the moment, the determination of death is still pending. The current theory is that the last person to have suffered an attack gets the credit. By killing, you gain badges fragments. These are so important that it is amazing that there is no explanation for this.

There is a possibility to obtain four badges. To get them you will need to collect 2, 6, 16 and 30 bits of badge respectively. With each badge you get, you will earn online bonuses. The bonus is a 25% increase with each badge, possibly doubling the output of your waste line. Obtaining these badges is very important because the attached bonuses help your defense resist strong attacks from other players in your game who are badged. The good news is that every time you knock, you take all the badges as trophy. More on this subject in a minute.

To obtain the badges, you must target the players strategically. If you have four pairs of eyes and hands, you can target people manually using the right stick in the default controls. For those of us cursed with only two sets each, we'd better use the preferred targeting of the right stick. There are four different targeting systems, one of which is virtually useless. If you touch the stick, you aim for a random screen after each line of memory you send. Do not look to the left.

The most useful and strategic options are badges, knockouts and attackers. By touching the right stick, you will target the player with the highest number of badges. While this may seem like a good way to earn badges as a prize, it's also a surefire way to piss off the person who is the strongest in the game. So it's not advisable to do it unless you have a good painting with at least one badge on your belt.

By moving the stick, you will attack the players who attack you. Although it's not great if you're only targeted by one person, this targeting system is amazing when you have multiple targets. The reason is that the number of people who attack you actually gives you an exit bonus.

Once you are attacked by two people, you start to gain an extra line of waste. Then, for each person who attacks you after, you earn an extra two waste lines, capping at nine extra lines when six people are targeting you. This bonus applies regardless of your targeting system, but is especially useful in the attacker system. I've seen a lot of memes about being targeted and scary, but in reality, it's a huge plus.

Finally, moving the stick will activate KO targeting. Now, the exact mechanisms are not yet defined, but the theory at the moment is that it targets the people closest to death. It's the machiavel of Tetris 99 and it's glorious at the beginning and middle of the game, at least for the moment. Although it seems to be the most used targeting system, it offers you the best chance of getting knockouts, which is good for getting early to creating a beautiful one. base of badges.

The essential point to remember from the targeting part is that you can not hope to win using a single targeting system. There is a ebb and flow of how the battle is going and although there are similar patterns, you must be able to adjust yourself on the fly. If you see that you are often targeted, go to attack your attackers and go on the offensive while you have the bonus lines. Do you think you have a good base of badges? Go for the throat of the highest badge holder when you have a good table set up. It's up to you, be ready to fail, learn from your mistakes and, most importantly, keep it clean!

Tetris 99 is so young and yet we feel that there is so much depth. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this game will evolve with new modes such as team battles, but also how will evolve the meta-game and the eventual e-sports component. Who could have thought that a nearly f2P game of a 35 year old game could be so much fun?
