SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The investigation into one of the worst boating tragedies in the history of the Santa Barbara Canal takes place above and below the surface on Santa Cruz Island, where the design diving boat declared itself on fire on Monday morning.

34 on board are dead. 33 bodies were found.

Diving teams from several Southern California agencies, as well as the FBI, team up with a rescue team to recover what remains of the ship, whose structure was destroyed and sank into 24-meter waters about four hours after the disaster. the fire started.

They used underwater cameras in very difficult conditions to find the victims and preserve the ship.

"This documentation is in progress with side scan sonar, so as to map the wreck before it is moved. We want to get as many video and digital images as possible. Before the vessel is moved, we hope we can understand that efforts are underway to recover it, "said Jennifer Homendy of the National Transportation Safety Board.

The Los Angeles Port Authority has also sent a large ship equipped with underwater cameras to join the allied agencies.

On the shore, at Sea Landing Pier, investigators look more closely at the Vision ship, which is normally docked next to Conception.

"Vision is a similar ship, it's not a twin ship." It's not the exact replica, but it's a ship similar to Conception, that means some things can be arranged differently but it's pretty close and I wanted to take a look at the ship and get an idea of the layout, "Homendy said.

Nearby, there is a special area with tents and equipment that will be used during the operation.

Part of the port's parking lot has been secured for this work, which will last several days under the coordination of the NTSB, the FBI, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department, the US Coast Guard and allied agencies.

After finding 33 bodies, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Coroner's Office uses additional equipment, including a large Los Angeles refrigerated truck, for the number of casualties.

A vigil for victims of the Conception tragedy is scheduled for Friday at Chase Palm Park.
