The design of the overhaul of the Pittsburgh International Airport was unveiled Wednesday by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. The new two-storey facility, scheduled to open in 2023, will be financed by bonds from airlines, concessions, car parks and natural gas wells.

Award-winning architect Luis Vidal, who designed the London Heathrow T2 Airport in London, designed the project with a rolling roof resembling the city's hills. Other features are aimed at improving safety and reducing journey times up to departure gates.

Airport officials said the changes were necessary to reflect the growth of the Pittsburgh economy.
