The worlds of fashion and tech aren’t exactly synonymous, but if there’s one gadget that has become a status symbol, it’s Apple’s AirPods. The tiny in-ear versions, that is. AirPods Max, huge in size and price, haven’t been around long enough to achieve ubiquity on the streets. But a newly discovered design surprise may soon help them stand out in the crowd.
Until now, AirPods Max weren’t known for their customization – pick any of the five colors and you’re done. But a recent teardown revealed that the headband was surprisingly easy to remove, leading to speculation about future tradable models.
If you’re in the market for a set of cans, check out our best wireless headphones, or if you prefer in-ear headphones, here are the cheap Apple AirPods deals.
The teardown of the Chinese YouTube channel PreLook revealed that the AirPods Max headband can be removed simply by inserting a SIM card eject tool (the same one you will find in your iPhone box) into a small hole at the top. of each helmet. Indeed, looking at the process in action (below), there is an undeniable feeling that the headband was designed to be swapped out easily.
For AirPods Max owners, this could be interesting news for two reasons. Firstly, it suggests that if the headband or cups were damaged, these modular elements could potentially be replaced without the need to purchase a brand new pair of AirPods Max (which at $ 549 / £ 549 would not be would not be ideal).
But perhaps more excitingly, it could suggest that AirPods Max may soon become a lot more customizable. Much like the plethora of official and unofficial Apple Watch bands available, could we soon see a ton of exchangeable AirPods Max headbands or mugs sold separately? With the right combination of colors, you may soon be able to make your AirPods Max look as vibrant (or garish) as you want.

Whether Apple itself plans to allow users to mix headbands and mugs remains to be seen. Right now, you’ll have to fork over several pairs of AirPods Max if you want to swap colors. Which, depending on how you look at it, is either completely ridiculous or the ultimate status symbol. (We’re in the old camp, by the way.)
Yet, even though customizable colors might help make AirPods Max stand out, that horrible Smart Case will still look like that horrid Smart Case. You can’t win them all. Check out today’s best AirPod deals below and head over to our Apple Best Deals page for more deals on the Apple lineup.
