The film Pokémon Detective Pikachu is coming out in cinemas around the world next Friday, in just one week. We're feeling pretty optimistic about this one – the trailers seem surprisingly promising throughout the movie's release – but now is the time to see what the critics think.
Yes, some media have now had the opportunity to view the entire movie and have posted their first reviews online. We are quite shocked to see that the points of view are rather divided. At the time of writing, the movie has a Metascore of 50 out of 100 – you can not get much more mean than that. For rotten tomatoes, it is currently at a much better 74%, however.

IGN Joshua Yehl [8.0/10]:

We would not be too discouraged, though. It is interesting to note that the comparison of critics of the major media in the film sector with those of video games reveals a common trend, which is even longer when we take into account the point of view of online personalities and influencers. who have already seen the movie.
Sites such as Polygon and Eurogamer had overall mixed reviews to positive, but both highlighted the joys of Pokémon themselves and the world around them. The more film-centric sites, which we have assume have not quite the same knowledge of the Pokémon franchise, have generally argued that the role played by Ryan Reynolds is the grace that saves here, the Pokémon not being particularly special.
The Pokémon fan site, Serebii, scored the movie 4/5, claiming that he "really plays a lot between the unconditional references of Pokemon fans and things for the uninitiated, but what about never cross the line one way or another and keep a perfect balance ".
This may suggest that the movie is great for fans of the show, while being just "OK" for those who do not know the Pokemon world and not so great for those who do not care about it at all. – which would make sense, after all.
