John Singleton, the screenwriter and director whose first feature film is 1991 Boyz the hood was a centerpiece of the 1990 film noir revival, was hospitalized earlier this week after suffering a stroke, reports Variety. Singleton went to the hospital after starting to injure his leg during a flight from Costa Rica to the United States. Doctors described the stroke as being "benign," according to TMZ. His family confirmed Singleton's hospitalization in a statement Saturday:

John is currently in intensive care unit and enjoys excellent medical care. We ask that privacy be preserved for him and our family at this time and appreciate all the prayers of his fans, friends and colleagues.

Singleton was the first African-American to be nominated for the Best Director Award for Boyz the hood, ultimately losing to Jonathan Demme for Thesilenceofthelambs. His other feature films include Higher Education, Poetic justice, the remake of 2000 Tree, and 2 fast 2 Furious. On television, he directed the nine-minute video of "Remember the Time" by Michael Jackson, who co-created FX Snowfall, directed episodes of Empire and Billions and received an Emmy nomination for leading an episode of The people v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. In a statement, FX Networks said they hoped for a quick and complete recovery. Former Singleton associates also wished him a lot of success on social media, including Snoop DoggBaby boy), Omar Epps (Higher Education) and Nia Long (Boyz the hood):

Singleton is 51 years old.
