John Singleton, director of iconic movies like "Boyz n the Hood", has been a victim of a stroke, according to his family.
"On Wednesday, April 17, our beloved son / father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke at the hospital.John is currently in intensive care unit and is under medical supervision", we read in a statement from Singleton's family. "We ask that privacy be preserved for him and our family right now and appreciate all the prayers that flow from his fans, friends and colleagues."
FX Network, which broadcasts "Snowfall," a show produced by Singleton's executive, called him "fighter" in a statement.
"The thoughts and prayers of FX and his Snowfall family accompany him and we hope for a quick and complete recovery," the statement said.
Several celebrities, including Snoop Dogg, Omar Epps and Nia Long, have expressed their wishes for Singleton for a quick recovery on social networks.
Singleton is particularly known for his films that examine the complexities of poor neighborhood living and the age of maturity for African-American youth. At age 24, he is the youngest filmmaker to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for his first film, 1991, "Boyz n the Hood".
He is responsible for several hit movies such as "Rosewood", "Poetic Justice" and "2 Fast 2 Furious".
