The director of the highly anticipated film heist Hustlers responded to rumors that there were tensions on the set between two stars of the film, Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu.
"Honestly, when I heard about it, it was such an insult to my set because I do not do that stuff," Lorene Scafaria told BuzzFeed News & # 39; AM to DM Wednesday morning. "I like working with actors of all kinds who need different things, but everyone hears so well about it."
"Jennifer and Constance really got that chemistry and that relationship right away," Scafaria said. "It's a bit hard to pretend, to be honest."
Rumors of an alleged split between Lopez and Wu surfaced when outlets announced that Ms. Wu had demanded a high price for her character in the film about exotic dancers who team up to strip off their rich male clients.
But according to a recent Guardian profile, Wu explained how this type of rumor had legs.
"I did not ask for anything," Wu told the newspaper. "The reason is that the team called reporters because they did not put me in jail. [their stories about the film]. That's not what I asked them to do.
Scafaria put this into the account of the common storytelling often seen in the media where successful women – in any sector – compete with each other.
Of course, there is some competition in a strip club, said Scafaria, but the basis of many of these friendships is "fraternity and fellowship".
"It's an indispensable part of survival and we just have it on the set," Scafaria said.
The film, starring Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Lizzo and Cardi B, as well as Lopez and Wu, follows the story of strippers ripping off wealthy men on Wall Street for money.
It is also based on the 2015 New York Magazine article "The Hustlers At Scores" written by Jessica Pressler.
The film has garnered rave reviews from critics and it has been said that Lopez could even be nominated for an Academy Award.
Ira Madison III, hosting the Crooked Media podcast Keep it!, said: Lopez was "a beast".
After hailing the performance of the triple threat, he praised Scafaria's film for "a different energy from the one you traditionally get in a genre that men like Soderbergh and Scorsese have created."
Actor Melanie Lynskey (Always after, stone castle, Easy) called Lopez an "interim central".
In short, many people are here for the incredible performance of Jenny from the Block.
"In a way, that's my love letter to Jennifer," Scafaria said to AM to DM when he was asked all the praise that Lopez received.
"I am so happy that she receives this kind of attention."
Hustlers arrives in theaters this Friday.
