Rupert Goold said she understood why Liza Minnelli was so critical of her upcoming biopic about her mother, Judy Garland.
"It's an invasion of privacy on a certain level, I suppose," said the director of "Judy" at "Entertainment Tonight" in an interview. "And it's the complexity of being a star child, it's someone you want to own in an intimate and personal way, but somehow in a showy way, like a public property."
ASSISTANT JUDY GARLAND DECLARES THAT THE STAR WAS "COMPLETELY FRAGILE" AND "COMBINED" BEFORE HIS DEATH
In June, Minelli embarked on a crusade against the film and Renee Zellweger, who plays a Garland at the end of his career in the film that will debut this weekend, after Radar Online reported that the two men had linked Zellweger's portrait of Minnelli's mother.
Minnelli, 73, posted on Facebook at the time: "I've never met or talked to Renee Zellweger."
She added, "I do not know how these stories started, but I do not approve or sanction in any way the next movie about Judy Garland. All contrary reports are 100% fiction. "
WHY RENEE ZELLWEGER HAS NOT MET THE CHILDREN OF JUSY GARLANDS IN THE ROLE OF RESEARCH IN THE COMING BIOPIC
Zellweger, 50, recently told Fox News how she was able to play the troubled actress and singer.
"I approached it with a lot of humility, with curiosity and admiration for life, I'm really impressed, really," and I just wanted to learn as much as I could and read between the lines because I think the movie went without address or not. "
Actress "Jerry McGuire" continued, "That's what is not in the film. [contemporary] article that was written on it. What did they leave out? What are the extenuating circumstances that nobody wants to talk about? What happens in private moments?
"And then, I sat down with all the facts and all the linear history of this period of his life, and I tried to understand my personal experiences and all that I had read and what was missing in the telling this part of the story of this part of his life.
"But again, I just wanted to be careful because, like generations of people, I loved her all my life. It is therefore a special experience that we thought we could live from this exploration for a few years. "

Despite the condemnation of the project by Minnelli, Goold hopes that the actress will continue to watch the film.
"I have a friend, he's a dancer and singer who worked with Liza, he said," The thing about Liza is that she's incredibly passionate and emotional, but she's really going to change her point of view, "Goold told ET." Not that Liza was particularly hostile to the film, but I am sure she will see it and find it in celebration. "
"Judy" is scheduled to open in theaters on Friday, September 27th.
