FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The director of a Florida school where 17 people were shot dead last year is resigning.

The Sun Sentinel announced that Ty Thompson, principal of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, announced Friday his resignation at the end of the school year. He invoked his health and his family to justify his departure.

Thompson was director in February 2018 when authorities announced that a former student had opened fire on the school. It was added to a school district investigation in March, when its responsibilities were transferred to other administrators. Three deputy directors were transferred to other jobs in November, while the district was investigating their roles in the shootings.

Thompson was not on campus when the shooting occurred. A state panel investigating the shootings criticized Thompson in December for not being informed of how his administration had dealt with the threats of students.
