The Dodgers have announced their reinstatement Trea Turner from the list of injured COVID-19. He’s not in the starting lineup tonight, but he could make his debut with his team on the bench tonight. Relief Victor González was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 4, with inflammation of the right knee to open an active list space. To create a space for 40 players, the team transferred the right Jimmy nelson to the 60-day injured list. Nelson will undergo Tommy John surgery and a right flexor tendon repair procedure.
Whether it’s tonight or tomorrow, Turner will soon be playing his first game as Dodger. The All-Star shortstop came next Max Scherzer last week as part of the best blockbuster of the deadlines season. The 28-year-old had tested positive for COVID-19 shortly before the exchange, so he remained in isolation until today.
Turner adds another elite player to an already star-studded lineup. He’s hitting .322 / .369 / .521 with eighteen home runs in 420 home plate appearances, his second consecutive season of elite offensive production. One of the best baserunners in the game, Turner also slipped 21 sacks, while playing average to better shortstop defense. The set makes Turner one of the sport’s most valuable positional players, although he seems likely to move to second base out of deference for Corey seager in LA Wherever he plays, Turner should be a massive boon for a Dodger club that is trailing the league’s top Giants by four games in the West NL.
This isn’t all positive news on the health front for the Dodgers with Nelson undergoing surgery. Although the club have not provided a timetable for his return beyond his exclusion for the remainder of the season, it seems likely that he will miss all of the 2022 campaign rehab. This is overwhelming news for one. A respected, high-quality pitcher who has been plagued by a series of long-term health issues over the past few seasons.
Nelson looked like a potential starter at the top of the rotation after a stellar 2017 season with the Brewers. However, a shoulder injury cost him the entire 2018 campaign. It also kept him sidelined for much of the 2019 season, with an elbow injury costing him an extra month that year. . Nelson was ineffective when he was healthy enough to pitch, and Milwaukee didn’t call him at the end of this season.
The Dodgers signed Nelson in the 2019-20 offseason, but back surgery in July kept him from pitching all year. Los Angeles brought Nelson back on a minor league deal to work in relief, and he stuck to his end of that deal. The 32-year-old has hit a £ 1.86 ERA on 29 executives this year, emerging as a potential high-leverage option for manager Dave Roberts. Unfortunately, he landed on IL with an inflamed elbow on Wednesday. This problem apparently requires surgical repair.
Nelson will arrive in free agency at the end of this season. He could present multi-year team offers for the 2023 campaign. Alternatively, Nelson could recover from the injury on his own and look to sell himself to clubs once he regains his health. Either way, it’s a devastating twist for a player who has already overcome more than his fair share of health issues.
