The Dodgers announced Monday they have claimed the receiver Anthony Bemboom excluding waivers of Angels and right-handed Conner Greene off the Orioles waivers. In order to open a space on the 40-player roster, Los Angeles transferred left-handers Danny duffy and Clayton kershaw to the 60-day injured list. The “60 day” minimum on these IL stays for Duffy and Kershaw begins with their initial placement on the IL – July 20 for Duffy and July 7 for Kershaw. Duffy would be eligible to return on September 18 and Kershaw on September 5.
Bemboom, 31, has hit .213 / .302 / .347 in 88 home plate appearances with the Angels over the past two seasons. He also spent a very brief time in the big leagues with the Rays. While Bemboom hasn’t hit much in the Majors through a small sample of career games, he’s a .256 / .349 / .410 hitter in five-season AAA games. It also boasts an excellent 35 percent steal rate behind the dish and has been credited with strong framing ratings from Baseball Prospectus, FanGraphs and Statcast.
The Angels nominated Bemboom for an assignment over the weekend when they called for another catcher Chad Valach off the Marlins’ waivers. Bemboom will now head to the Dodgers and provide some experienced depth to a club that has just traded the best possible catch Keibert Ruiz in the Max Scherzer/Trea Turner blockbuster.
Greene, 26, made his Major League debut for the Orioles this season but was hit hard in 3 2/3 innings. The former Blue Jays, Royals and Cardinals minor leaguer gave up six runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts in a short time with the O’s and had an equally tough situation in the Triple- At this year (7.09 ERA in 20 2/3 frames).
That said, Greene averaged nearly 96 mph on his heater with the Orioles and posted strong hitting and chasing rates of opponents. Greene was a rating prospect for several years, pulling 70 ratings on his heater and 55 and 60 on his shift (on the 20-80 scale). He has had control issues throughout his tenure in the minor leagues (11.2% walk rate), but the Dodgers are conspicuously intrigued by his raw stuff and may have their own ideas on how to maximize his potential. Greene can be optioned for the remainder of the season but will no longer be an option in the minor leagues in 2022.
The news of Kershaw’s move to the 60-day IL shouldn’t come as a huge surprise after manager Dave Roberts recently said he expected his left-hander to be out until September. Duffy’s move to the 60-day IL, however, is a bit more surprising. Royals General Manager Dayton Moore said shortly before swapping Duffy at the Dodgers that he expected the southpaw to return in mid-August. The Dodgers were of course able to perform their own assessment of Duffy’s medicals and were aware of the risk of a longer absence, but they were probably still hoping to get Duffy back on the mound sooner than that. If the rest of his rehab from a flexor strain goes well, Duffy may still be an option for the final weeks of the season and a playoff reliever box contender.
