The Philadelphia Eagles have come up with two free agent cornerbacks on Tuesday: Briean Boddy-Calhoun and Juston Burris.
Boddy-Calhoun is a native of Wilmington, Delaware, 26, with 22 starts in 43 games. Remember, all of these starts have been achieved by the Browns in the last three seasons after entering the league as a recruited untrained free agent. Boddy-Calhoun had 132 tackles, 19 defensive passes, three interceptions, one defensive touch, one forced fumble and one sack at this point in his career. Boddy-Calhoun also eliminated Nick Foles in the pre-season last year:
Burris is a 26-year-old who was selected by the New York Jets with a fourth round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He made only two starts in 38 career appearances. Burris has 30 tackles in total, seven assists in defense and two interceptions in his name.
The Eagles have a vacant spot after placing Cre'Von LeBlanc in the injured reserve Monday night. It makes sense that they are looking to sign a corner since Ronald Darby (who has just suffered an ACL injury), Avonte Maddox, Sidney Jones and Rasul Douglas are currently the only four healthy corners of the team.
A remarkable similarity between Boddy-Calhoun and Burris is that they are not both veterans. This means that their contracts will not be guaranteed for the entire 2019 season if they are part of the first week. This is important for the Eagles because Philly is probably looking for a short-term corner depth. The Eagles could sign one of these two types, then give them up next week to make room to sign the contract again with Orlando Scandrick, a veteran.
Some thought that the Eagles could use their free spot in the tight third end, but it seems that may not be the case. Doug Pederson pointed out, however, that the Eagles could use André Dillard as a blocking point in some packages.
The Eagles will likely take their place on the board by Wednesday morning as the team will hold one of its three main practices before playing in Washington.
