The Eagles begin to reduce their squad to 80 players

UPDATE: The Eagles have officially given up the next four players to drop to 81: wide receiver Hakeem Butler, center Harry Crider, wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon and cornerback Lavert Hill.

No surprises from this group. Butler is the most notable name as some liked him very much for the 2019 NFL Draft and the Eagles were planning to move him to the near end. But that transition didn’t end up happening and Butler mostly struggled in camp. Crider has always thought of himself as a camp corps, but his departure means the Eagles only have three original UDFA signings left on their roster: Jack Stoll, Kayode Awosika and JaQuan Bailey.

The Eagles have yet to open another spot in the roster before Tuesday’s deadline.

ORIGINAL STORY BELOW.

As a member of The New NFL Downsizing Procedure, teams had to cut from 90 to 85 players last week. The next round of cuts is fast approaching, with clubs to be limited to 80 players by 4:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, August 24.

The Philadelphia Eagles currently have 83 players after giving up wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon and cornerback Lavert Hill on Sunday night.

Ausbon was an undrafted rookie free agent who retired from Texas A&M. He didn’t do much at camp and was clearly buried deep in the depth of the receiver. The 21-year-old was the youngest player in the roster.

The Eagles initially signed Hill to their practice squad at the end of last season. He did a few plays at camp, but he was still far from making the list.

In other news cut in the list (… or not) there was also a report before in Sunday practice that Blake Countess had been released. But he was seen training and that tweet has since been deleted. The Countess won’t make the 53, but we’ll see if he sticks to the cut to 80. He could very well be one of the three players the Eagles cut today or tomorrow.

You’d think Philly could get a jump on their cups as they head to Florham Park, New Jersey to practice the New York Jets starting Tuesday. It seems like it would be weird for them to bring some of the players with them just to cut them off right after practice.

After the reduction to 80, NFL teams will need to reach the regular-season maximum capacity of 53 players by 4:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, August 31.
