The Earth’s rotation has accelerated in 2020, we may need a “negative leap second”

Another strange thing about 2020: the planet has accelerated.

The speed of the planet’s rotation often drifts slightly, depending on changes in wind, ocean currents, or sloshing around the Earth’s molten core. But over the past few decades, this has generally produced a microscopic slowdown in rotation. The result of this is that every year and a half (or so) we have had to add a “leap second” to the atomic clock.

But in 2020, the opposite happened – we had the fastest 28 days on record since 1960. It sped up the planet’s rotation so much that the Time Lords are in charge of the clocks on our planet. plan to add a “negative leap second”: they will remove time.

Not enough Principle, but I’m still super excited. As Live Science writes:

“It is entirely possible that a negative leap second would be needed if the rate of Earth’s rotation increases further, but it is too early to tell if this is likely to happen,” physicist Peter Whibberley of the National Physics Laboratory at United Kingdom, told the Telegraph. “There are also international discussions about the future of leap seconds, and it is also possible that the need for a negative leap second will push the decision to end leap seconds for good.”
