"The country's economy is devilishly good and President Donald Trump's approval figures are terribly terrible," Tim Malloy, deputy director of the Quinnipiac University poll, said in a statement.

"For the moment, the disparity leaves the president on a fragile field of re-election," he said.

On the Democratic side, the survey found that only former Vice President Joe Biden scored more favorably than unfavorably, 49% to 39%. He also found that he was the first choice for party nomination among Democrats or Leaning Democratic voters.

"It's about former Vice President Joseph Biden, then all the others, from Senator Bernie Sanders to Senator Elizabeth Warren, and then from Senator Kamala Harris to a group of people most of whom are Democrats. Have never heard of it, "Malloy said.

The national telephone survey of 1,078 electors took place from May 16-20. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points, the university said.
