The big picture: The Sony PlayStation VR (PSVR) did not really appeal to the players, but frankly, no virtual reality platform has yet taken off. This does not mean that Sony is ready to throw VR sponge. On the contrary, the company believes that PSVR can only develop as technology evolves.
Sony Network Entertainment International Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Shawn Layden told Game Informer in a recent interview that PSVR's next 10 years of development would be "dramatic". He compared the evolution of the platform to the adoption of smartphones. They were expensive and did not necessarily do everything users wanted them to do when they emerged, but eventually they became mainstream.
His feeling is true for just about every technology introduced. Certainly, there have been failures that have come to naught, but among the gadgets that are now in their fourth, fifth or fifth generation, the terrain they have traveled has been vast.
"You can not access version 5.0 until you get version 1.0, that's just the nature of the thing."
Sony has sold 1.3 million PSVRs in 2018 and more than 3 million since its launch in 2016. This figure may seem little compared to the 91.6 million PS4 installations needed to run the platform , but Oculus Rift is still best selling HTC Vive according to Statista. Layden explains that slow adoption rates are mainly due to users' lack of attention and high expectations of what PSVR should provide. These expectations are unreasonable for what he calls a "technology 1.0".
"What I like about PSVR (…) there have been very few times in my career – and I've been working in technology since the late 80s – when you can be part of a company. true 1.0 experience, "he said. "The problem today is the expectations of citizens and [attention] the staves are so short. Now, it's Oh! PSVR, it's great! When will it be that size? "
Layden suggests remembering your first cell phone, then looking at the one you have now.
"You can not look at this Nokia phone and your smartphone and see how you got there," he said. "In the same vein, you are watching PSVR right now, none of us will be able to imagine what the future will look like, but the change will be as dramatic."
