Caris LeVert felt perfectly healthy when he was traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Indiana Pacers last week.
Now, however, LeVert has been sidelined indefinitely after an MRI revealed a small lump on his left kidney.
If he had stayed in Brooklyn, who knows when the doctors would have found the mass. The exchange – which was part of the larger four-team deal that sent James Harden to Brooklyn from the Houston Rockets – may have saved his life, as in that setting he had to endure a physical team. LeVert has got off to a great start this season with the Nets. The 26-year-old averaged 18.5 points and a career-high six assists per game in his first 12 games. He averaged 18.7 points and 4.4 assists with the team last year.
LeVert, who the Pacers effectively selected with the No.20 pick in the 2016 draft, signed a three-year, $ 52.5 million contract with the Nets ahead of the season.
It’s unclear when the former Michigan star will be able to dress for the Pacers. LeVert said he is still waiting for test results and doctors are not yet sure if the lump is cancerous.

“For me, the most important thing is to have my body healthy and make sure I live a long life,” LeVert said, via ESPN. “Before basketball I think that’s the most important thing so for me I don’t really look at that side of things.
“Obviously I want to play as soon as possible. I am a competitor, I love to play the game. But for me, I think the most important thing is to make sure that I am healthy. So, as far as the timeline goes and everything in between, we’ll definitely find out in the future. But at the moment, we just don’t have those answers.
