The exclusive PS4 pistol from Destiny 2 is finally available to all, thanks to Cross-Save (Sort Of)

The recently released cross-backup feature of Destiny 2 went live this week, and it's absolutely wonderful. If you have the necessary content on each platform, it allows you to take your Guardians from the PS4 to the Xbox One on PC, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of PC or play with friends on another platform. But it offers an additional benefit for those who have already invested in Xbox One or PC versions: the ability to get a new Exotic weapon, exclusive to the PS4, Separator of waves.

As usual on Fridays, Xur has arrived. And even though it's still worth the detour (even if you already own all Exotic models, the armor that it sells may have better rolls than your version), cross-backup brings a new advantage to Xur. In addition to directly selling four specific exotics, Xur also allows players to buy an Fated Engram, which decrypts into an exotic one that you do not already have. With cross-backup, PC or Xbox One players can now access the PS4 version of the game and buy the Fated engram. Provided you already have all the other aliens available for your character, this should ensure that your Engram becomes a splitter. We tested it ourselves and, of course, we had Wavesplitter on what was previously a character only on PC.

This comes with two big caveats. First, cross-saving forces you to own Destiny 2 and Forsaken on PS4 in order to acquire the rifle. And secondly, Wavesplitter can not be used currently on PC or Xbox One. While you are free to equip it on PS4, return to other platforms will make it unusable.

This will change later this year with a new update; A change we now see that Bungie totally controls the game is the end of the platform-exclusive content. For years, Destiny and Destiny 2 players on Xbox One (and, more recently, on PC) had to wait a year before receiving content that was launched on PS4. This included strikes and exotic records like Wavesplitter, which switched to PS4 alongside Forsaken last year.

This trick of Fated Engram is made possible thanks to a change that occurred earlier this year. Before an update, these engrams were limited to exotic pre-Forsaken, but those added to the game as part of this expansion can now be acquired by buying Engram. Exotics added to the game since then must always be obtained by normal means.

Wavesplitter is a trace rifle, very little present in the game. By holding the trigger down, its damage changes over time. This is one of the many elements of Forsaken's exclusive PS4 content that Xbox One and PC owners can expect to have access to from here at the release of Shadowkeep on October 1st.
