The planned execution of a Florida serial killer targeting older homosexual men was awaiting a US Supreme Court ruling on his latest appeals.
Gary Ray Bowles, 57, was considering last Thursday an appeal against the murder of his father. His lawyers claimed that he was too intellectually handicapped to be executed. Bowles was about to die by lethal injection at the Florida State Prison in Starke.
The execution was scheduled for 18 hours. Thursday, but was delayed while the Supreme Court was considering his case.
Bowles was sentenced for the murder of Walter Hinton in Jacksonville Beach – one of the murders that terrorized the corridor of the Interstate 95 East Coast Highway in the space of eight months in 1994.
