The faithful clashed with a Navy veteran after she went to an Easter service holding a rifle and her baby, and threatened to blow up the building.
Anna Conkey broke into the Tsidkenu Church in the Clairemont area of San Diego on Sunday, brandishing the handgun, police said.
The 31-year-old then walked onto the scene and began talking about the kidnapping while grabbing the 10-month-old boy.
Terrified spectators bravely intervened and knocked Conkey to the ground before the police arrived at the scene to stop him.
Conkey, who also worked as a reporter for NBC 7 San Diego, said in YouTube and Facebook videos that Jesus was a "liar" and that the Bible was a "trap".

"The woman went up on the stage and threatened to blow up the church by brandishing the handgun," San Diego police said in a press release.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident and pictures showed police taking the child Conkey was carrying to safety.
After examining the handgun, police discovered that she had been unloaded and that the explosive specialists found no trace of explosive after a scan of the complex.
"She said of madness that the kidnapping is not real and that everyone is going to hell," recalled a witness.
Conkey is a former journalist and author in creative writing at San Diego State University.
In recent years, she also reportedly produced digital media at NBC 7 San Diego and the US Navy.
Conkey posted videos of one hour on a YouTube channel in which she asserted that there was a "big disappointment" in churches and synagogues.
