A "helpless" father came home to find his 4-month-old daughter and 14-year-old daughter dead in their California home, and their mother alive but insensitive.
No charges have been filed, but Ontario, California, Sgt police sergeant. Bill Russell said at a press conference on Wednesday that the police regarded the mother as the "responsible".
The mother, who was not identified, would have left suicide notes – one in the house and one in the car – saying that she intended to kill the children and she even, said Russell. He did not specify what the notes said.
The terrible find was made on Tuesday, causing the father to call the police, Russell said. Ontario is about 40 miles east of Los Angeles.
The mother was taken to the hospital and is in a stable state, but was not able to provide a statement to the police, Russell said.
Russell stated that the father of the children had never been arrested and had made a voluntary statement to the police. The last time he saw his two kids alive, is when he got back to work that morning, Russell said.
"He lost everything at this point," Russell said of the father, calling the case "a horrible tragedy".
Although the cause of the girls' deaths was not determined, the police described their deaths as double homicide. There was a fight on the scene that could have played a role in the deaths, said Russell.
Russell said that "the mother was suffering from depression" but he did not say whether she was being treated.
