A man from western Texas, in a "downward spiral", made calls "equals" to the police and the FBI before launching into a shootout that claimed the lives of seven innocent bystanders, announced Monday the authorities.
The 36-year-old killer, Seth Ator, was fired by his employer on Saturday before embarking on a bloody war in nearby Odessa and Midland, Texas.

"Right after this shooting, he called 911 … and his employer too," Odessa police chief Michael Gerke told reporters. "And basically, they were complaining to each other because they had a disagreement about that shot."
He left his employer's office in the trucking industry before the police arrived.
The killer then called the FBI's national phone line, again making an absurd statement, authorities said.
"This is frankly ambiguous statements about some of the atrocities he felt he had suffered," said Christopher Combs, special agent in charge of the FBI's San Antonio office. "He did not threaten that phone call."
In both calls to the authorities, Ator did not suggest that he was about to kill seven people, authorities said.
"It's a rambling statement – it has been much discussed in all of its contacts," Gerke said. "No threat."
Authorities have completed their search in Ator 's house on Sunday, but continue to check what they found in the interior.
While the FBI and the police stopped very far from explaining the motive of the murderer, they painted the portrait of a man who had been struggling for a long time.
"It's a very strange residence.It's very small.I can tell you that the conditions reflect what we think his mental state was going in this situation," said Combs.
"It was a long downward spiral, he did not wake up on Saturday morning and did not get into his business, then it happened, he went to this company in difficulty, probably in difficulty since a moment … we really need the help of the public to reach us when they see people in this downward spiral that could be on the way to violence. "
