This week, a federal court in California ordered Monsanto / Bayer AG to pay Edwin Hardeman $ 80 million after a jury found his weed killer, Roundup, had caused his cancer. The case is just one of thousands of lawsuits filed against the company for use by applicants for the glyphosate herbicide. In 2015, the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans. The Food and Drug Administration concluded that the herbicide was probably not carcinogenic to humans. In August 2018, a California state court jury awarded Dewayne Johnson, a school gardener, nearly $ 289 million in damages. The verdict was later reduced to $ 78 million and is on appeal. In this conversation with Chris Hedges, Vandana Shiva, environmental activist and author, talks about the interests of Monsanto / Bayer AG and other major stakeholders of the GA in India and its fight for the protection of life forms, varieties seed and farmers.
