We are less than a month away from Samus Aran’s next adventure, Terror of the metroids, and a new gameplay trailer from Nintendo is the perfect way to catch up Metroid Fusion Change immediately.

In June, shortly after Nintendo announced Terror of the metroids, franchise director Yoshio Sakamoto told Playserver and a group of reporters about his hopes for what a new Metroid game can offer in the modern age.

“Maybe that feeling of fear,” he said. “As I said before, young players who have never experienced the series before may watch this fear-based gameplay and want to give it a go.”

A new gameplay trailer, released Friday, captures that terror. With all the classic movements and world navigation mechanisms of previous installments, Terror Metroid adds elements of stealth to the mix, adding a Samus hunting robot named EMMI in the levels to ensure players’ pulse clocks are 160 bpm. Watching the trailer, EMMI’s nimble 2D movements and plated armor promise to challenge even franchise veterans.

New Terror of the metroids The trailer highlights the variety of moves Samus will use as she navigates the ZDR, a vibrant Pandora-style planet filled with oceans, volcanoes, and other places that require jumping to survive.

This might not be too surprising for those familiar with Metroid, but for newcomers who think they’ve seen all that a side-scroller can do, the Terror Metroid the trailer can send a chill down your spine. But as Sakamoto continued in our article, in the end, the game is as much about overcoming horrors with trust as it is about being perpetually afraid.

“It’s really about Samus meeting fear,” he said, “but she’s actually standing up against that fear and fighting and beating it. And that part is important.

Terror Metroid releases for Nintendo Switch on October 8.
