The first pictures of Shadow and bone, Netflix’s adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling Grishaverse books reveals the main cast in action – as well as a glimpse into the fantasy world.
“Think of Imperial Russia, not medieval England, repeating guns instead of great swords,” said Bardugo, who is also an executive producer.
The first set of books centers on Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an orphan cartographer unaware of her own great power. Ravka’s country is torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a supernatural barrier of tangible darkness, which is slowly destroying the country’s economy and society. Alina, along with her best friend Mal (Archie Renaux), are members of an unnecessary army that the Ravkan government sends through the fold.
After her powers manifest, Alina joins the ranks of the Grisha Army – a force of wizards led by the mysterious and incredibly powerful General Kerrigan (Ben Barnes, in what truly is the most perfect cast of fans, comes to life ).
But the series doesn’t just adapt the first trilogy: it also incorporates stories from the Crows duology, the derivative heist books about a criminal gang. These books technically take place years after the main trilogy, so the full gang of six is yet to be assembled. Still, there’s Crows frontman Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), his right-hand wife Inej Gafta (Amita Suman), and sniper Jasper Fahey (Kit Young).
Grisha spy Nina Zelik (Danielle Galligan) and witch hunter Fjerdan Matthias Helvar (Calahan Skogman) complete the cast. Matthias comes from a Scandinavian-inspired country that fears the magic of Ravka. The two end up joining the Crows years later, but it looks like the series will explore their controversial first meeting.
All eight episodes of Shadow and Bone will premiere on Netflix on April 23. Check out the cast posters below:
