To date, Ford has only unveiled a traditional hybrid gas-electric powertrain for the US version of the 2020 Explorerbut in Europe they go a little further in painting on electrification.
Ford revealed Tuesday the Explorer Plug-In Hybrid. Built for the European market, the Explorer PHEV offers only short periods of electric driving, thanks to a much larger battery than the standard Explorer Hybrid.
The PHEV explorer has a sound quite similar to that of Lincoln Aviator PHEV who debuted at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, and for good reason, both share a platform. Under the body is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 coupled with an electric motor and a 13.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. The result is a net horsepower of 450 horsepower and a torque of about 620 lb-ft.

The two-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission are standard. All of these qualities combine for an electric range of about 25 miles and a towing capacity of 2,500 kilograms. There are several hybrid modes that can generate a battery charge, maintain it or use it at the request of the driver. There are also a number of driving modes that are independent of electrical systems, including Normal, Sport, Trail, Sliding and Deep Snow / Sand.
The highest trim can be complemented by a 10.1-inch touch screen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch gauge display. In terms of safety, standard equipment includes automatic braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, speed signal recognition and Lane Keeping. Check enough boxes and the car will also be able to slide in the parallel and perpendicular parking spaces without help.
There is a lot of creature comfort on the inside, as well. There are many standard features, including electric heated and cooled front seats, second-row heated seats, heated steering wheel, wireless charging and tinted rear windows. The superior Platinum trim incorporates a Bang & Olufsen audio system with 14,000 14-speaker speakers.
The Ford Explorer PHEV will go on sale in Europe later this year. If you wait until Ford announces the US version, you may have to wait forever. Ford spokesman Mike Levine said in an email that Ford was not planning to introduce a PHEV Explorer to the United States. Maybe it's just a little too close to the PHEV Aviator.
