Tony Thomas has stolen 31 goals in his record-setting season at Florida State 12 years ago. Saturday night, he wrote the history of professional baseball with the weirdest stolen base of his life.
Taking advantage of a new experimental rule from the independent Atlantic League, which works together with Major League Baseball, Thomas became the first player in the history of professional baseball to steal the first goal.
He played in the sixth round of the South Carolina Blue Crabs game against the Lancaster Barnstormers. The match was aimless at the time, and Thomas came through with a goal.
When a 0-1 throw went from the Barnstormers receiver to the back net, Thomas took off for the first goal and saw the stolen goal awarded. Thomas, a Tampa product, has experienced one of the best offensive seasons in the history of the state of Florida over ten years ago. In 2007, he became the first Seminole to record 30 doubles, 100 hits and 30 stolen bases in one season. He was named National Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball this season and became a third-round pick among the Chicago Cubs.
Thomas plays in his 13th season of professional baseball, including several passes at the AAA level.
