Alex Stamos, a former security chief on Facebook, said Tuesday that Mark Zuckerberg is expected to hire a new general manager and focus on product manufacturing.

"There is a legitimate argument that says he has too much power," said Stamos, who left the company in 2018 at the Collision Conference in Toronto. "He must give up some of that power. If I was him, I would hire a new CEO for the company."

Stamos even proposed a specific suggestion: Microsoft president Brad Smith.

Facebook and Zuckerberg have been involved in the controversy since the last presidential election, when the platform was flooded with false information and became a haven for bullying and harassment. Stamos knows something about the problems that plague the company – he was among the first to Facebook to discover that the Russians were using the social network to interfere in the 2016 elections.

Since Chris Cox, product manager, was appointed in March, Zuckerberg has been in charge of products for Facebook, added Stamos, adding that he should stay there and give the lead role.

The product is "where his passion is," Stamos said. "He should hire a CEO who can help point out both internally and externally that the culture needs to change."

Stamos also said that there were legitimate arguments to break Facebook and separate YouTube from Google on the grounds that the two companies had reduced competition. However, breaking Facebook does not solve the underlying problems that plague social media, such as spreading false information or manipulating the ad targeting system for political purposes, he said.

"Antitrust legislation is generating a lot of excitement because it's nice to say to yourself" I hate this business, so break it up, "said Stamos." Having three companies that have the same basic problems does not make nothing better."
