How it all began
Brian Heater: The project basically started internally at Google, is that right?
Kaiwei Tang: We met in 2014 in Google incubator called 30 weeks. That's where we met and started talking about Light. Phone possibly.
Joe Hollier: The 30 week program is an experiment from Google's creative lab. Their hypothesis was that, if they had the proper resources and advice, the designers might be able to create new creative creations and that they should be on the founding table of the companies.
So, their assumption was that we, the designers, could imagine a new start in the field of software applications, and then by designing the end product, which is the way Google's creative lab works, we could inspire the engineers. and make financing investors we would need to make the product a reality.
Brian: What have you seen in the market and that has not been filled by countless smartphone companies?
Joe: People felt overwhelmed by their smartphone and were eager to escape, and we had not really seen it.
