The full strawberry moon will appear full from Saturday night to Tuesday morning

The next full moon will be Monday morning June 17, 2019 and will appear "in front of the Sun" (in Earth's longitude) at 4:31 am EDT, NASA Science reports. In South Africa, the full moon will show its face at 17:31 on Monday, June 17, 2019.

The moon will appear full for about three days from Saturday night to Tuesday morning.

Since the 1930s when the Maine Farmer's Almanac began using Amerindian names for full moons, the full moon of June or the last full moon of spring (in the northern hemisphere) is known as the "Strawberry Moon", a universal name for Algonquin tribes. The name comes from the relatively short season for strawberry harvesting in northeastern North America.

An old European name for this full moon is Mead Moon or Honey Moon. Mead is a beverage created by the fermentation of honey mixed with water, sometimes with fruits, spices, cereals or hops. The tradition of calling the first wedding month the "honeymoon" dates back to at least the 1500s and may be related to this full moon, either because of the custom of getting married in June or because the " Honeymoon "is the" sweetest "moon of the year.

It has been suggested that the summer solstice, June 21, was when honey was ready to be harvested in hives or in the wild, making it the softest moon.

Europeans have also called it the Rose Moon. Some people think that name comes from the color of the full moon at this time of year. The orbit of the moon around the earth is almost in the same plane as the orbit of the earth around the sun (only about 5 degrees). When the sun appears highest in the sky near the summer solstice, the full sun opposite the sun usually appears the lowest in the sky. Especially for high European latitudes, the full moon near the summer solstice shines through more atmosphere than during other times of the year. This can give the full moon a reddish or pink color for the same reasons that a rising sun or setting sun appears in red.
