It’s never too early to start talking about new Samsung phones, right? OnLeaks offers a series of renderings for the Galaxy S22. These are usually based on CAD renderings provided to case manufacturers, and while there may be some details wrong with them, the cutouts, camera block, and other major features must be correct.
The first is a Galaxy S22 Ultra render, and here’s a shock: it has an S-Pen! Samsung dropped the Note line this year to focus on foldable phones, but it apparently still can’t pass up the idea of the phone’s handwriting. Samsung delivered stylus accessories for the S21 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 3, but these required some sort of case for storage. This render shows the S22 Ultra with the telltale oval along the bottom edge, just like an old Note phone. Push it in and the pen will come out.
The advantage of a built-in S-Pen is that if you want to handwrite on your phone, you’ll always have the stylus with you. The downside is that the S22 Ultra’s battery will be smaller than it could possibly be, as the pen holder takes up a lot of space. It’s also a huge bummer for anyone who wants a high-end Samsung phone but has no interest in handwriting as they will have to put up with the pen which is soaking up battery space. You do not have the choice.
The design around the S-Pen holder means that the S22 Ultra generally has a Galaxy Note 20 style design. There is a flat top and bottom edge, and the large corners make the phone a full rectangle, giving the S-Pen a little more space to be stored. The front screen is also a full rectangle, with only corners rounded to a minimum. The phone still has a hole-punch camera, instead of the under-screen selfie cameras that Samsung packed into the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
The only major deviation from the Note 20’s design is the rear camera assembly, which now has a piece missing in the lower right corner (so it forms a “P” shape). The missing piece is in front of the periscope camera lens; previously the Galaxy S21 Ultra needed this space for the periscope camera, which took up a lot of space horizontally. Now, the normal periscope impression does not appear to be suitable.
OnLeaks also offers renders of the base S22 and S22 +, which look identical to models from last year.
The most interesting thing about S22 phones would have to be the SoC. Samsung is banking on its internal Exynos chips and entering into a partnership with AMD, which will supply the GPUs corresponding to the processors designed by ARM. Samsung and AMD announced the partnership in 2019, and Samsung’s Exynos division said the fruits of the partnership should be seen in its next flagship, which will be the Exynos 2200 SoC slated for the S22.
Samsung does not typically ship Exynos chips to many parts of the world, choosing to split the lineup with Qualcomm for major markets like the US and China, but we find it hard to imagine the company would introduce Radeon + SoCs.
