If you have been paying attention to the NFL project lately, you have something in common with George R.R. Martin, the author of the A song of ice and fire series of books on which is based "Game of Thrones". Martin was born and raised in New Jersey and fervently follows both the Jets and the Giants. He is known on the blog to share his feelings about each team.
This weekend was no different because Martin took the time to write down his thoughts on each team's project despite the fact that "Thrones" aired one of the most anticipated episodes of its history. And your man, George R.R. Martin, is NOT delighted that the Giants took Daniel Jones to 6th place instead of Dwayne Haskins.
Here is Martin's analysis on this choice, as well as the selection of defensive tackle Clemson Dexter Lawrence at No. 17 overall, via his blog, "Not a blog".
Daniel Jones of Duke at number six? Yes, they need a young quarterback to succeed Eli. But Dwayne Haskins was right there. Why not him? I'm not the middle school ball, but at every step, Haskins is way better than Jones. Jones has launched 52 touchdowns in three years at Duke, Haskins has launched 50 in a year in the state of Ohio. In less interceptions. Against much more severe opposition. Dave Gettleman must have seen something in Jones that no one else could see. But even if you accept that, taking it at six o'clock seems crazy. He would have been there at 17. Why not take Josh Allen or one of the defensive studs at age 6 and Jones at age 17? It's a lot more logical. Who else was going to catch him? Skins? Skins preferred Haskins, it was common knowledge. As far as I know, everyone in the world, with the exception of the G-Men, preferred Haskins.
And then we arrived at number 17, the choice of giants for Odell. What did they choose there? A huge defensive tackle of 342 pounds on Clemson. Very very strong, they say. Do not do a lot of bags, but great against the race. Who does it look like? It sounds like Harrison's snacks for me. Who the Giants cut in mid-season because … uh … "everything he's done" was to stop the race, he did not have any bags. After his release, Big Blue spent the rest of the season getting bullets in his stomach. I had to fix that. So, to fill the hole of Snacks, we write Young Snacks. All this cost us was a Hall of Fame receiver.
That's a pretty good analysis there!
For the majority. The Giants did not release Damon Harrison, for example. They traded to the Detroit Lions for a conditional fifth-round pick, which the Giants then used in the course of the exchange to get choice number 30, DeAndre Baker. Martin is right to say that Lawrence is considered an actor of the Harrison genre, which certainly makes the selection interesting.
And Martin is not the only one to believe that the Giants should not have taken Jones in sixth place. It was one of the most criticized choices of the weekend, especially after general manager Dave Gettleman hinted that Jones could sit behind Eli Manning for three seasons. Martin (and the Giants fans) can only hope that his learning will go hand in hand with Arya Stark's training with the Faceless Men. Otherwise, the Giants will soon look for a new quarter.
