The gap between Destiny 2 testing and Darkness proof weapons is wide

This week is a big one for high-end loot hunting in Destiny 2. We’ve seen the launch of Grandmaster Nightfalls, and the surprise reactivation of Trials of Osiris with this massively powerful 3-win / bounty hand cannon mode. failure.

But I have to say in the initial Trial / Grandmaster loot offering here, if this is supposed to be something on par with Trials, but, on the PvE side, I just don’t see it.

For the events, we have:

Shadow price – An assault rifle with an archetype in a terrible location.

Swarm – A machine gun that’s not much different from most, and MGs aren’t exactly what you devote your heavy slot machine to most of the time in PvE for obvious reasons.

The Palindrome – Perhaps the most wanted of the bunch, but a mediocre archetype during the 120s era.

But the trials? Trial loot is out of control these days. Desperado Messenger. Two-strike igneous hammer. Astral as more or less the only viable primary PvP shotgun without a sunset. A sword with chain reaction. A fusion rifle with a very unique charge advantage. A rocket launcher with many god roll options. A sniper who still has Vorpal. The list is lengthened increasingly.

Trial weapons have Bottomless Grief, a new perk that’s the PvE equivalent of Celerity. And since Celerity is a trash can, it too is a trash can. Beyond that, there’s not much to make GM’s loot feel powerful or unique, even with the follower versions. The new Big Ones mod is a good start, but best used with… adept Trials gear, most of the time.

This may be just the start. The trials loot didn’t start out like anything all it’s special, I guess, with Astral really being the one thing everyone cared about for a while. But I was sort of hoping that they would learn some lessons from it for the GM Adept Booty launch, and it doesn’t appear to be.

Maybe that will change over time, but at this point I certainly don’t see the point in browsing GMs for this particular loot. And in the lower levels which are more cultivable, I can even get “god roll” drops like a Feeding Frenzy / One for All Shadow Price and still be … bad, given the place this is in. type of weapon, and there certainly isn’t one. There are no unique perks with the new one, Bottomless Grief, it’s something you actively want to avoid.

If Trial Loot can evolve, I think Trial / Grandmaster Loot can as well. But for now, I think the scales are hugely in favor of Trials, which is why you’re seeing PvE players jumping off cliffs for a hand cannon instead of running Nightfalls this week. Hopefully that will change over the next few seasons and that this loot will be as coveted as the Trials loot.
