Magic: the gathering is about to announce new crosses with other popular fantastic properties including the Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40,000. Hasbro will announce the crossovers later today at an investor event, along with a reorganization that will turn Wizards of the Coast into its own division. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the news that Warhammer 40,000 and the Lord of the Rings both will come Magic: the gathering, with the Lord of the Rings get full expansion. It is currently unclear whether Warhammer 40,000 will also get full expansion, or if it’s a Secret Lair drop similar to a crossover with The walking dead.
Wizards of the Coast had a massive 2020, grossing over $ 800 million in revenue from Magic: the gathering and Dungeons and dragons. The Hasbro division is on track to double its revenue between 2018 and 2023 thanks to a boom in its two main properties. While Magic: the gathering has found new popularity due to digital growth Magic: the gathering arena Thu, Dungeons and dragons added millions of new fans thanks to an accessible ruleset and increased exposure to pop culture. Notably, the two brands have also had several crossbreeds in recent years, with two D&D campaign tuning books published based on Magic: the gathering parameters and a next Magic: the gathering card game based on the D&D Forgotten Realms setting coming later this summer.
As part of Hasbro’s reorganization, the new Wizards & Digital division will house the assets of Wizards of the Coast with a focus on expanding existing games, creating new ones and overseeing digital licenses. The remaining divisions will be a consumer projects division encompassing toys, while entertainment will deal with the licensing, distribution and production of film and television content.
Several new video games will also be announced later today.
