The George Washington Bridge reopened after the mine clearance team investigated a suspicious package

The two levels were closed in both directions on Thursday night due to a suspicious package, CNN told a spokesman for the New York and New Jersey Port Authority.

The upper level was closed around 9:30 pm and the lower level around 10:20 pm, according to CNN's affiliate, WPIX.

The basement of the George Washington Bridge was later reopened in both directions, according to a tweet from the bridge's official report.

The higher level then reopens, with the Twitter page of the bridge announcing the end of police activities but residual delays for drivers.

The NYPD said the activity was linked to a bomb threat, WPIX reported. The investigation was handed over to the port authority's police department, which appealed to the Bergen County anti-bomb squad, the station reported.
