HOOVER, Ala. – Georgia will kick off the second day of SEC Media Days on Tuesday. Sixth-year head coach Kirby Smart will climb behind the podium, joined by fourth-year junior quarterback JT Daniels and main tackle Jordan Davis.
Let’s be honest for a second here – a lot will be said and the majority will be of no consequence. Still, we’ll learn a few things and below Dawgs247 has five questions we hope will be answered.
1. What is the official word on Arik Gilbert’s status for the 2021 season?
We’ve got a pretty good read of this one, but it’ll be nice to hear what Smart says on the record. It has been reported that GIlbert has some work to do academically to be eligible for the Bulldogs, but based on the information we have gathered he is in good shape. Georgia went strong after the 6-foot-5 248-pound tight end for a reason and it’s hard to imagine a scenario where they’ve put in so much time and effort if there is any real doubt that they will. he will not be able to play. Right now we’re betting he’s good to go, but we’re still interested in having the official word out.
2. What is Georgia’s injury situation prior to preschool?
We already have some information here. Kearis Jackson is suffering from a leg injury, but we are unsure of his status for the camp. UGA has a pair of broads recovering from more serious injuries, but we’ll get to that in a moment. The Bulldogs were also without inside linebacker Nakobe Dean and outside linebacker MJ Sherman in the spring. Both had shoulder surgery. Who is in and who is out to start camp?
3. Where are Dominick Blaylock and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in their respective recoveries?
We could have included these two guys in the previous question, but this question deserves its own discussion. Blaylock hasn’t played for the Bulldogs since December 2019, when he tore his ACL in the SEC Championship game. He suffered the same injury to the same knee about nine months later and missed the whole of 2020. When will he be cleared? The same goes for Rosemy-Jacksaint, who suffered a horrific dislocation of his ankle in November against Florida. Based on the videos posted on social media and the information we’ve gathered, it should be either to start camp or at some point, but we want to hear what Smart has to say.
4. How much work has JT Daniels been able to do with his receivers during the offseason?
Every quarterback across the country has worked with their receivers this summer. They will all tell you that they have worked hard. We’d love to hear what Daniels has to say and whether or not he’ll quantify it in some way. Daniels sent a group of his wide receivers to Southern California, where they trained together for several days. They also had ample time to tune in to Athens for player-led pitching sessions. Maybe it will reveal a number of pitching sessions or a percentage of days they were able to work together.
5. How do defensive backs Tykee Smith and Derion Kendrick fit in?
That’s a question Smart and Davis can answer. Georgia needed the help of a defensive back, mainly on the cornerback and STAR / nickel this offseason and these two should play a major role. They certainly weren’t transferred from West Virginia and Clemson to straddle the pine. But form matters and it will be interesting to hear what Smart and Davis have to say. If we’re honest neither of them will say much negative, but maybe we could get something out of the language they use. We might also learn a bit more about how Smart perceives Smith’s potential role in defense.
