Here’s who stood out on day three of the 49ers’ training camp. Keep in mind that the team didn’t do 1-on-1 or 7-on-7 drills. Instead, they warmed up and did a lot of special teams and 11-a-side drills. against 11.
GOOD
1. The wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
Caught another 60-yard touchdown pass from Trey Lance. It was Samuel’s second long touchdown, and we’re only on Day 3. Samuel has been the 49ers’ best attacking player so far, and it hasn’t been close. . He’s in the best shape of his career.
2. Wide punt receiver / turner Brandon Aiyuk.
Didn’t catch any passes during team drills, but practiced returning the punts which is great news as Aiyuk is the team’s top punt returner. The 49ers must let him return the punts as Arizona State allowed him. After practice, Aiyuk said he wants to return the punters and is working to prove to the coaching staff that he’s ready. Good for him.
3. Running back Elijah Mitchell.
The only successful running back on the team today. The other running backs continued to try to run outside without success. Mitchell was the only runner to run consistently between tackles and gain yards. Look for him to be an effective inner rusher.
4. Kentavius Street defensive tackle.
In the first practice game, Street blew up starting center Alex Mack and stopped Raheem Mostert for a five-yard loss.
5. Defensive tackle DJ Jones.
Blown by Mack and stopped Trey Sermon for a five-yard loss. Not a good day for Mack.
6. Defensive tackle Kevin Givens.
Blasted guard Jake Brendel and stopped Wayne Gallman for a five-yard loss. Not a good day for Brendel either, whoever he is.
7. Defensive tackle Zach Kerr.
Huffed starting left guard Laken Tomlinson and stopped Gallman for a five-yard loss. Not a good day for the whole racing game other than Mitchell.
8. Defensive end Samson Ebukam.
Defeat Trent Williams and then Mike McGlinchey to record two sacks in one workout. Ebukam is clearly benefiting from his transition from outside linebacker to defensive end.
9. Quarterback Josh Rosen.
Thrown two nice passes down the middle – one to Mohamed Sanu, who Sanu caught, and one to Richie James Jr., who James let go. More on James below.
THE NOT SO GOOD
1. Defensive end Nick Bosa.
I did not practice today. That means he didn’t stretch, warm up, stay on the sidelines – nothing. He was MIA head coach Kyle Shanahan said he gave Bosa a “day of rest,” which likely means Bosa’s surgically repaired left knee must be in pain. He said Thursday he was in pain. Not the best news.
2. Wide receiver Jalen Hurd.
He also hasn’t trained today as he also had a “day off” as he’s coming out of a torn ACL and hasn’t played football since 2018. This guy is the new Jerick. McKinnnon on the 49ers. He cannot stay healthy.
3. Tight toe MyCole Pruitt.
Training failed with a calf injury. Pruitt is the first player to get injured at training camp.
4. Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst.
Failed practice with an ankle injury. Hurst is the second player to be injured at training camp.
5. The tight end George Kittle.
Caught only one pass and committed a hold penalty that canceled out a great long run from Mostert. Kittle hasn’t lived up to Kittle in training camp so far.
6. Wide receiver Richie James Jr.
Gave up the two passes that came his way. He seems to have a real problem handling Trey Lance’s passing speed, which means James might not last long on the 49ers roster, as Lance is the future, and possibly the present.
7. Quarterback Nate Sudfeld.
Missed all three attempts to pass today. Wasted everyone’s time. Shouldn’t be on the list. Good grief.
