There will be those who reject this Texas Redshirt junior quarterback Casey thompson did Saturday night in a 58-0 blowout from Rice beating an outclassed opponent.
And to some extent, they would be right.
But in the bigger scheme of things, Thompson proved he was the Longhorns’ starting quarterback because of how efficiently he operated the Texan offensive – leading the Longhorns to seven TDs out of their first eight possessions before moving on. hand the ball to Hudson Card, who started the UT’s first two games, with 7:14 left in the third quarter and Texas ahead of 51-0.
“There’s something about him when he comes in that the ball goes down the field,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said of Thompson. “I imagine Casey will take the lead (quarterback) before our game against Texas Tech, and Hudson (Card) will have a chance to play as well.”
Thompson completed 15 of 18 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns and scrambled twice for 7 yards (including a 4-yard run on third and 3 that kept a 20-yard touchdown pass Jared Wiley alive in the second quarter).
Along the way, Thompson converted a fourth and three with a 31-yard catch-and-run completion in Xavier Digne on the first possession of UT; converted a third and 14 from UT 7 by hitting Kelvontay Dixon with a 22-yard completion on a skinny post; and even served as a lead blocker on a 27-yard cutback executed by Roschon Johnson in the second trimester.
“Coach Sark obviously has to make that decision (about the starting quarterback going forward),” said Thompson. “I can only control what I can control. But obviously I’m a competitor and I want to be the guy in the future.”
Thompson completed nine of his first 10 assists as Texas took a 30-0 lead. The only failure was an interception on the opening play of UT’s second possession when Thompson’s arm was hit as he was throwing the ball. Rice, however, failed to make Texas pay for the mistake, missing a 29-yard field goal after initially playing Texas 12.
Safety in Texas Jerrin thompson forced a fumble that was picked up by the cornerback Josh thompson at Rice 44 with 1:30 left in the first half – just enough time for Thompson to find the first-year receiver Xavier Digne for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds left, giving Texas a 44-0 halftime lead.
It was an exit party for Thompson and Worthy, who had seven catches for 88 yards and a touchdown – all in the first half.
Sarkisian appeared determined on Monday to send the ball to the Worthy Fast, and so this week’s ride used Worthy as a pop pass recipient on the jet sweeps.
Worthy also took top honors early in the game after catching a pass from Thompson to fourth and third at Rice 41 in UT’s first possession of the game and turned it into a 31-yard catch-and-run for Rice 10.
