The Guantanamo prison commander is fired

The naval admiral in charge of the Guantanamo Detention Center was fired for "loss of confidence in his ability to command".

"US Navy Commander, US Navy Admiral Craig Faller, was relieved by US Navy admiral John Ring, commander of Joint Task Force at Guantanamo, April 27, because of a loss of confidence in its ability to command, "said a statement. Colonel Amanda Azubuike, spokesperson for US Southern Command.

"Brigadier-General John Hussey, deputy commander of JTF-GTMO, has been appointed acting commander," Azubuike said in his statement. "This change in direction will not interrupt the safe, humane and legal care and custody afforded to GTMO inmates."

Joint Task Force – Guantanamo is the military command responsible for the detention of the remaining 40 detainees in the detention center located on the base.

Azubuike told ABC News that a command investigation had been opened in March. The results of this investigation were submitted to Admiral Faller in mid-April.

No details were provided on the allegations that could have triggered the investigation.

Faller personally informed Ring Saturday that he was relieved of his duties at a meeting at South American Command Headquarters in Florida.

Ring was commander of the JTF-Guantanamo since April 2018 and, according to the New York Times, he should have left his post the week of June 11.

"The vast majority of commanders complete their missions with distinction," Azubuike said. "When they are not up to the job, we hold our leaders accountable, which reflects the importance we place on public trust in our military leaders."

Ring will be temporarily reassigned to other duties of US Southern Command.
