James Gunn has been reinstated as director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 following the Twitter scandal that resurfaced last summer, reports Deadline. Gunn is also called to lead Warner Bros.'s Suicide Squad 2. IGN can confirm the accuracy of the reports of Deadline.
According to Deadline, the decision to rehire Gunn was actually made "and was made several months ago, following conversations with the Disney Studio management and the Marvel Studios team". According to the website, the decision to cancel Gunn's dismissal was made after Horn and Gunn met "several times to discuss the situation." Convicted by Gunn's public apology and handling of the situation, Horn said decided to reverse the trend and reinstate Gunn. "
Deadline indicates that production will begin on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after Gunn completed his work on Suicide Squad 2. Following his removal from the Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, Gunn would have come to write and direct Suicide Squad 2, which would not serve directly as a result of David Ayer's film but to a revival with new characters and cast members. As recently as March 6, it was reported that Idris Elba was in talks to join DC's next title.
Gunn was originally fired by Disney on July 20 following the resurgence of controversial tweets on topics such as rape and pedophilia, mainly in the years 2008 and 2009. At that time, Alan Horn, president of Walt Disney Studios, had issued a statement in which it stated: "Offensive attitudes and statements found on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with the values of our studio, and we have severed our trading relationship with him."
