The reassignment of Lafferty comes after an email was issued in July, which he had sent to the asylum officers to report the difficulties they had to overcome to implement a new asylum policy.
It is not clear if Lafferty's move is connected to email. BuzzFeed first reported the reassignment of Lafferty and reported that the acting director of the USCIS and Trump administration insider, Ken Cuccinelli, had chased him out.
In the memo, Lafferty wrote that the agency was "again asked to adapt and do it with very little time to train and prepare."
"If I did not know that we were among the most dedicated, most adaptable and talented public servants currently in the federal government, I'm afraid I can not implement these changes in such a short time," wrote Lafferty.
Asked about Lafferty's move, a USCIS official said the agency "has the power to reassign these senior officials to better serve the agency."
