TAMPA, Florida (AP) – TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Chloe Jackson made two big hits in the final 35 seconds, giving Baylor a lead and, with the second, the national championship with a 82-81 victory over Notre Dame on Sunday.
The Irish fighters had the chance to tie in the final seconds after a bad shot, but star goalie Arike Ogunbowale could only make one attempt out of two.
Jackson's driving attack six seconds from the end, place the Bears two.
She also hit a jumper from the free throw line with 35 seconds to go for a two-point lead, which Notre Dame matched with free throws.
The Irish Fighting eliminated a deficit of 11 points in the fourth quarter and had a lead of one point at about two and a half minutes.
Jackson led the Bears, who won their third national title, with 26 points on 13 out of 25 shots. Kalani Brown added 20 points.
Ogunbowale led Notre Dame with 31 points.
It was a rematch of the 2012 title, also won by the Bears.
Notre Dame won the national championship last year.
It was also the first championship game since 2012 in which the two coaches – Muffet McGraw of Notre Dame and Kim Mulkey of Baylor – were women.
