A crowdfunding campaign has begun for Homeworld 3, with a funding goal of only $ 1.

Not surprisingly, donors have already committed much more than that. At the time of writing this article, the game's total figure stands at $ 434,500 out of a total of 2,413 – and there are still 27 days left.

Homeworld 3 and its campaign were announced at PAX West this weekend. It is developed by Blackbird Interactive, a studio founded by the original game's artistic director Rob Cunningham, with support from the Gearbox Publishing team that helped bring the Homeworld Remastered Collection to market.

In an FAQ at the bottom of the Fig page, Gearbox explained that the only $ 1 request was "because we want it to be clear that the game is fundamentally sound, in terms of funding".

"We partnered with Fig to give longtime fans who have been supporting Homeworld for 20 years, giving them the opportunity to invest in the success of Homeworld 3 and help us understand the game they dream of."

Since Homeworld 3 is already based on a "solid foundation, in terms of funding," it is not clear why the surplus funds in this campaign will be used. GamesIndustry.biz Reached out to comment.

The choice of Fig as crowdfunding platform means that the contributors will be able to invest in order to generate a share of the profits when the game will be launched, currently reserved for the fourth quarter of 2022.

Gearbox also talks about the possibility for fans to get involved in the development of the game, initially through a survey reserved for contributors that will gauge expectations regarding "features, priorities and even what the collector's edition will include."

The publisher pointed out that Homeworld 3 is at an "incredibly early" stage, just months before pre-production.

Donors are also invited to invest $ 500 in Fig's stock itself, which will generate returns based on the platform's share in Homeworld 3's sales revenue. These investors will also receive a copy of the game.
