A hearing in the House on reparations for slavery is scheduled for next Wednesday. This is the first time in more than ten years that a panel will examine "the ongoing impact" of slavery on the country and the next steps in "restorative justice".

The scheduled hearing before the Judiciary Subcommittee of the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Chamber will feature testimony from writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and actor Danny Glover.

It is said that the purpose of this panel is "to examine, through open and constructive rhetoric, the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade".

The former Democratic Representative of Michigan, John Conyers, first proposed that Congress study reparations in 1989, after sponsoring a bill, the resolution of the 40th Chamber, which he reintroduced each session until his resignation in 2017.

The Democratic Republic of Texas Sheila Jackson Lee, the new sponsor of the bill, introduced it earlier this year and has requested a hearing next week. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she supports a study on reparations, which has not been heard since 2007.

The issue of reparations has resumed its national importance, with several candidates in the 2020 Democratic presidential election having expressed their support for some form of compensation for the descendants of slaves. However, none seemed to support compensation in the traditional sense of direct payments to black Americans.

Instead, the candidates came up with somewhat vague ideas, such as the use of funds to create policies to combat economic inequality that could disproportionately benefit African Americans.
