Maleah Davis was missing earlier this month by former fiance of her mother, Derion Vence. He told the police that Maleah and his 2 year old son were abducted on May 3rd by a group of men in a truck after being stopped on a Houston highway. He said that he and his son were released the next day, but that the kidnappers had kept Maleah and his vehicle. The police later said that the story did not add up.
Acevedo said Thursday that he thought Vence knew where the child was but did not talk to the police. Vence is accused of having tampered with evidence, including a human cadaver. Investigators found blood in Vence's apartment and search dogs detected the smell of human decomposition in his car when it was found.
"We firmly believe that he knows where she is and if he wanted to tell us, he would do it," said the chef.
Deputy Chief Matt Slinkard, who also spoke at the press conference, said: "We are not getting the level of cooperation we need from those involved at this stage."
In addition to asking anyone who could see anything or having information about the case, Acevedo also urged the public to be vigilant when traveling to low-traffic areas, such as hiking trails and wooded areas. He said to pay attention to things like a displaced floor.
